The 15th of March marked a momentous occasion for DR YIELD: its 20th anniversary! It’s a time for reflection, celebration, and gratitude as DR YIELD looks back on its journey from a startup to a global leader in semiconductor yield management.
The Beginnings
Every great product starts with a real problem. For our founder Dieter, that moment came while working as a yield engineer in fabs in the US and France. Responsible for monitoring semiconductor production data, he had one major fear: missing any important information in the flood of data, and being responsible for the consequences.
So, he decided to take matters into his own hands. He wrote some scripts to automate the data monitoring process. And the results were remarkable: Issues were detected earlier and the company he worked for recognized that they had saved millions as a result.
Fast forward a few years into 2004, and while working in another company where there was a commercial yield software package in use, he was surprised to find that automatic monitoring was still not the industry standard.
When parameters slowly drifted, spatial patterns appeared on wafers, or anomalies repeated across multiple wafers, the software simply stayed silent. No alerts, no emails, no way to know something was wrong unless you were constantly checking.
So, this time he wanted to solve the problem not only for his employer, but for the whole industry. He wrote a business plan for a smarter kind of yield software – one that could detect issues and notify users immediately. By March 2005, the plan had become reality. A small team started in the business incubator that was sponsored by University of Technology Graz.
Expanding Across Borders
From the beginning, it was clear that DR YIELD had a global market in mind, and the very first customers were Japanese companies. Over the years, the team at DR YIELD has attended conferences across the globe, showcasing its expertise and commitment to innovation. The customer base has also expanded, reaching semiconductor manufacturers in other parts of Asia, Europe and in North America.

At the core of DR YIELD’s success is YieldWatchDog, a cutting-edge yield management system for the semiconductor industry. Over the past two decades, YieldWatchDog has continuously evolved to meet the ever-changing demands of semiconductor manufacturing. For several years now, YieldWatchDog-XI has been powered by AI, enabling smarter analytics and faster decision-making. With the recent addition of our Defect Module, the software now offers even greater precision in defect detection and yield optimization – reinforcing our commitment to continuous innovation.
